To build a custom stormwater drainage system for the Narendra Modi stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.
The challenges for this project were threefold: the requisite of a precast curved stormwater drainage system, the field of play rapid drainage requirement, and the short construction timeline.
We worked with L&T Construction to conceptualise, design, and supply a customised curved drainage solution. One of the challenges was designing surface stormwater drainage that drains the field of play within 30 minutes, while a larger one was to create curved drainage infrastructure.
Through value engineering, we ensured that the drainage solution for the field of the play area was in tandem with the customised grid of the stadium. By using DU Drains (T25) of varying sizes and cast-in-situ joining for every third component, we created an effective precast solution that cut the construction timeline down by more than half.
L&T Construction was looking for solutions in line with the National Building Code (which defines the load-bearing capacity at 45 tonnes). To ensure them that the precast DU Drains (T25) were more than capable of handling any load caused by an emergency such as a fire, we studied fire-truck loads all over Ahmedabad. This grit and determination ensured that this precast solution is now in use at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
For the rest of the stadium, we used Free Slope Drains to ensure the directionality of the water moves outside that stadium, despite a high variation in ground levels throughout these areas.
The Motera stadium project required unique design solutions for its drains and lids, with a total of 58 variations of drains and 19 variations of lids. Initially designed in Japan, these components were adapted to meet Indian construction norms, demonstrating our commitment to delivering custom solutions for our clients. The sophisticated precast concrete drainage infrastructure at the Motera stadium showcases the effectiveness of precast solutions and solidifies our place as a leader in the future of Indian infrastructure.
